5. Hill walk - Binn Bán

This walk starts at Kylemore Abbey, intersects Connemara National Park, the summits of Benbaun (477m), Benbrack (407m) and Knockbrack (442m) and crosses an interesting geological zone known as “lakes marble formation”. There are excellent views of Diamond Hill to the west and northwards towards Doughruagh Mountain. The walk includes a visit to a site incorporating a profile view of blanket bog.

Kylemore Abbey and grounds; lime kiln; megalithic tomb; children’s burial ground; holy well;  excellent views of the Twelve Bens, Diamond Hill, Kylemore lake system and the Dawros  river, world renowned for its population of migratory salmonid’s and pearl mussel.

5 – 6 hours

Very difficult. This walk is approximately eight kilometres distance with various ascents and descents. Highest ascent is 670m.

Hillwalking kit including walking boots, waterproof jacket, food and drink are essential for this walk.

As the route enters the Twelve Bens/Garraun Complex Special Area of Conservation (site code 002031), special conditions apply.
